| General remarks: | Purvis 1929 stelt in zijn artikel dat in Ripon, Manchester en Beverley dezelfde beeldsnijder heeft gewerkt: William Bromflet (Brownflet, Bromfleet, Brownflete) en zijn werkplaats. Dickinson 2008 hangt deze theorie ook nog aan. Tracy 1990 weerlegt deze aanname echter en Grössinger 2002A volgt hem daarin. Hij ziet een verre verwantschap met het koorgestoelte van de Saint George Chapel in Windsor en verder overeenkomsten met koorgestoelten in de omgeving. Volgens een 17e eeuws document (in Tracy 1990) werd vermeld dat de zuidzijde van de koorbanken gemaakt zijn (en betaald) door James Stanley (sterft 1515), kerkvoogd van Manchester en later Bisschop van Ely. De noordelijke rij werd gefinancierd door Richard Beswicke/Bexwicke een ondernemer uit Manchester. Letts 1886 ziet drie of vier verschillende handen die aan het koorgestoelte gewerkt hebben. Tracy 1990 vermoedt dat een meestersnijder en een gezel de banken gemaakt hebben. Dorsalen en overhuivingen aan westzijde zijn 19e eeuws, ontworpen door Sir Gilbert Scott. In het begin van de 16e eeuw was de kerk in Manchester nog geen kathedraal maar een collegiale kerk. Pas in 1847 werd de kerk een Kathedraal. |
